Review: This site is part of the about.com stable, and comes under its geography banner. This useful site has two pages of links to articles related to GIS, GPS and technology in geography, each with a brief description of the article. As with all about pages there is a side bar with further links to related sites and topics. On this site they include world atlases, blank maps, a free geography email course and a series of geographical articles. In common with all about sites there is a proliferation of sponsored links and adverts, and the articles all tend to have a naive earnestness. However this does provide a good source of information.

City Population

Mainly suitable for:

Review: This site aims to give the population and area for every country in the world, together with the populations for most agglomerations, major cities and administrative areas. Clicking start on the homepage leads to an overview from where cities or countries can be chosen from menus or an interactive map. Figures are updated regularly - at the time of visit the country figures were only 7 weeks old. The level of detail in the statistics is astounding - the UK has figures for all towns over 200000 inhabitants. Maps open in a separate window to show the location of any city you select. This is a superb site for statistical data.

Weather Watch * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Weather Watch

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: Weather Watch is an interactive service which allows you to select schools from around the world (though most are in eastern United States) and see their weather. You have to select the schools from a drop down menu which is not large enough to give all the school name and location details, making the process a bit hit and miss. When you choose a school you get a page with the weather conditions there - if it has been entered by the other school. If not the message reads "no data". The statistics given are temperature (high, low, noon), sunrise/sunset, sky conditions and precipitation. Schools can register to join the program, contributing data.

Homework Help

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site is part of the Geography section of About.com. It is concerned with homework for geography students. There are a number of useful articles such as an atlas, links to geoography answers and world facts, figures and reference. Many of the links are US relevant. This page also has a large number of links to elsewhere in the About Geography website, such as access to blank or complete maps, quizzes and many other geographical articles. These are in the rather earnest style common to all About sites, and the site is also heavy on the advertising front.

Where is that?

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is a multi level online game which tests a student’s knowledge of countries. On the opening page players have a choice of continents plus the United States and a world option. There are five levels available for each option. On level one a country is highlighted on a regional map and a choice of four possibilities is given. If an incorrect answer is chosen the correct answer is given and a mark is put in the incorrect column, Right answers obviously score in the correct column, allowing students to play against either themselves or their friends. In level two no choices are given and the name must be spelled correctly. In level three a capital city is given and a multiple choice answer chosen. In level four the same questions require an answer to be typed correctly. Finally, level five needs the student to correctly enter the name of the country and its capital to get a point. The game is quick to learn and fast to play and should aid knowledge retention.

The best part of the site for children is the Wildlife Watch, hosted by SOLAR, HEDGY and BUZZ. Wildlife Watch is the UK’s leading environmental action club for kids and boasts 60,000 members. The site looks at ways to help the environment, learning about species you could find in your garden in the Wildlife Diary, quizzes in the Fun Stuff section and details of local groups. An ideal site for KS2 and younger KS3 pupils.

National Geographic Kids

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: As the title suggests this is the on line version of the excellent National Geographic magazine for children. The site is designed to appeal to the MTV generation with lots of colour and moving images. Most icons respond by dancing or spinning when the mouse passes over them. The site has a huge amount of quality material, presented in a child friendly way. The homepage has frequently updated features and links to various NG magazines, games, activities, a colouring book, a geography challenge, homework help and maps. Parents looking over the child’s shoulder can get a newsletter and an education guide. Teachers can also access lesson plans (which are designed for the US system). You could visit this site every day for a month and still find something new - it is superb for younger children.
