Primary Resources Geography

Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: A page of general Geography resources to support teachers in their delivery of this subject. It includes free worksheets, lesson plans, activities and teaching ideas for primary and foundation teachers. One very useful resource is the table of weblinks for QCA geography which links topics and web links with a brief description of what they contain and matches them to the relevant year group. A number of resources, such as the weather records, would save teachers preparation time. The activities that include charts and tables are good in that they offer teachers a way of recording what children have seen and provide an inspiration of how teachers could tackle a project in their own class. There is also a great idea for a game suitable for Year 1 pupils to try to reinforce their geographical vocabulary and their understanding of some physical geography terms. There are a number of ways that teachers can embed ICT into the geography curriculum.

Franklin s Forecast - Lightning

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: In this site, hosted by the Franklin Institute Science Museum Online, you can investigate many aspects of climate and weather. For example there is a front page link to one of the most powerful forces in nature - lightning. There are three sections to this site - Lighting History, Lightning Science and Lightning Detection. Other weather elements are equally thoroughly covered. For example there are sections on El Nino, radar, forecasts and satellites. The material is clear and concise, and often has relevant illustrations. In addition you can follow instructions to build a weather station or follow links to other (US) sites of interest.

WeatherNet Weather Cams

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site, operated by the poorly named Pratt Institute, is fairly basic, but it delivers what it promises. On this site there is access to over 400 weather cameras situated throughout the USA. The images delivered are stills, and the time lag varies from camera to camera. This is a strangely addictive site, and is excellent for showing up to date images of storms or similar events as they happen. This is well worth a bookmark.

Tramline - The Virtual Field Trips Site

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This is a site with a very original idea - prepare students for field trips by taking a virtual field trip in advance. Virtual field trips are designed to provide students with a sound online educational learning experience. These field trips (web tours) take students to some of the top web resources. A navigation section at the bottom allows to go to the next destination in the tour. Since it uses other web sources as the stages information is constantly kept up to date. Site includes virtual field trips on volcanoes, hurricanes, deserts, and salt marshes. You can also download a free trial version of tourmaker software to allow you or your pupils to create their own virtual tour. This is an excellent idea, the value of which is reduced by the lack of UK relevant field trips.

El Nino - Hot Air over Hot Water

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This page is provided by the US Franklin Institute of Science, and in common with much of their material, adapts a practical hands on approach. This is a basic guide which explains El Nino at the simplest level. The front page has about one thousand words of explanatory text, with examples. Certain words and phrases are hyperlinked to provide further information if required. At the end of the article there are a few more links to further develop understanding. This is a good introduction, but it lacks illustrative diagrams or pictures.

Maps And Geography

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16, Undergraduate
Review: This site is part of National Geograhic.com, and is a wonderful resource for anyone seeking a map. This superb collection has all the published National Geographic maps and some more besides. Some are printable (they will print best if you have a large format plotter) and the list includes some excellent satellite images. The printable maps are draw in black and white and are searchable by location menus. Other maps can be viewed online, or copied and pasted to view later. Other features available on the site include map ordering, conservation maps and country profile. If you are not sure what you need simply go to the full maps and geography index and chose from a menu.

The water cycle

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This is a useful site for all key stage 2 teachers who are looking to teach the water cycle in the science curriculum. The site offers a series of lessons that takes you through the water cycle starting with 'Are you drinking the same water a dinosaur drank?' the lesson plans then comprehensively go through the main processes in the water cycle suggesting resources to use and activities to model each stage. Within the teachers section there are comprehensive support materials.

Sream Table

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This website consists of a lesson plan from Hawaii demonstrating the ability of a stream to erode, transport and deposit materials. The requirements of the lesson are fairly basic and should be available in all science departments. The lesson plan is not detailed enough in aims and objectives to stand up in a UK school situation, but it is a useful stimulus. In addition it has links to a series of similar experiment based observational exercises under the banner of "Exploring Planets Hands On Activities", as well as links to many other Hawaiian earth science related resources.

Auroras Paintings in the Sky

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site, operated by the University of California, contains some excellent images and video clips of auroras. The site aims to show you what auroras look like on Earth and from space, as well as explain how they are created. There is a good self guided tour, which can be visited in the order that suits the user, together with useful links and a teacher's page (very brief with just a couple of suggestions for incorporating auroras into the classroom). An interesting site to visit, but not really one with longevity.

Grand Canyon Association

Mainly suitable for:
Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This is the homepage of the Grand Canyon Association, whose remit is to support educational and visitor services at the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This is a very comprehensive site with much of the focus on commercial activities - book sales, membership information etc. Casual visitors will gravitate to the virtual tour, which allows locations to be selected from a map and click to open images of the chosen spot. Potential visitors can use the site to plan their itinerary, or to arrange their visit to coincide with a listed event. Finally, there is an interactive 360 degree online version of the Canyon's Kolb Gallery which allows you to wander around and select the painting you wish to view.

Alaska Volcano Observatory

Mainly suitable for:
Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS). This is a frequently updated site, detailing volcanic activity in Alaska and Russia. It includes maps, photos, video clips and updated reports on activity in Alaska, NE Russia and the surrounding area. The site has downloadable reports and maps detailing volcanic activity in the area. The library has a useful image search function, allowing you to find specific photos. In addition there are links to other volcano websites.

EarthCam

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16
Review: This site is provided by a company which makes web cams. The idea is that seeing them in action will make people buy one from the company. Whether or not this is likely, the result is a site where there is access to a staggering number of web cams. These are listed under categories, some of which are more educationally valid than others. Weather cams or Hollywood cam? Clicking a category brings up a list of web cams, with a description about the location. Some of the links were invalid, but most worked. This is a good way of getting an image of an elusive location, especially as the site has a search facility.

World Roof

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This This site gives you the highest and lowest locations for most countries around the world. Getting the information is a bit of a chore. You need to choose the continent your country is in, and then click for a highest or lowest table to appear and look for the country. Then you have to do it again to find out the opposite. The information is given in feet and metres, and there is a link top the alta vista search engine to find you images of the location. The site also has some fairly standard maps, and claims to have a weather link, which leads instead to a description of the countries location. Not a great site.

weather or not page

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This site is part of the Exploring the Environment series, and is US based. The front page is a little confusing as there are a number of icons that look like they should be links but aren't. The working icons are labelled Situation, Monitoring Resources and Satellite Picture. The first deals with weather prediction but has no real content. The second is the most useful as it has lots of current satellite images, all of the US. The third has an explanation of satellite technology. There is also a teachers section which is very comprehensive, but again is US orientated. Finally there is a link back to the homepage of Exploring the Environment which allows other topics to be accessed.

The Weather Channel - Education Index

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is the teaching section of the web site for the satellite channel "The Weather Channel". This is a US broadcaster and the materials are therefore US in nature. In addition no access is allowed to the resources without registration. There are however links to weather related activities for children, and access to on line resources such as an encyclopaedia, glossary and more. many of the activities are interactive, and these work be providing information based on your zip code, rendering them useless for UK visitors.
