National Oceanic & Atmospheric Adminisration (NOAA)

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16
Review: This is one of the world's foremost climatological sites. The USA´s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website gives information on weather, hazards, forecasting, climate change, satellites and space. From the front page there are options for a teacher’s site, a student site or "cool sites" for everyone. The rest of the frequently updated front page is taken up with recent articles and a site search facility. NOAA is the first port of call for research on hurricanes and tornadoes, and is very user friendly and intuitive to use. I addition an interesting ´´Safety Tips´´ page provides useful advice should you be caught by bad weather. There is a huge range of information and links on this site, and it should be bookmarked in every Geography department.

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3
Review: This is a single information page on how to make an Anemometer from The Franklin Institute Science Museum Online. This is a link from the interestingly titled "Windy things to make" which itself comes from the 'Blustery Beginnings' site. Great names and interesting for younger students to research into all things windy. The anemometer is easy to make - think Blue Peter and you have it made! Could be used in a weather enquiry at Key stage 3. Very child friendly.

FEMA FOR KIDS HURRICANES * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

FEMA FOR KIDS HURRICANES

Mainly suitable for:
Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3
Review: This is a children's site devoted to information about hurricanes which makes a great resource for a weather project. The front page has a short description of a hurricane, together with links to the rest of the site. The information is presented in a child friendly way - but it is still a learning tool. There is an extra resource to the left of the front page, where there are articles and links to other hurricane information sources, including, rather bizarrely, hurricane cartoons (but I bet kids will laugh). Although American this site is not as obviously US in it's style or approach and is well worth a visit.

Weather Watch * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Weather Watch

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: Weather Watch is an interactive service which allows you to select schools from around the world (though most are in eastern United States) and see their weather. You have to select the schools from a drop down menu which is not large enough to give all the school name and location details, making the process a bit hit and miss. When you choose a school you get a page with the weather conditions there - if it has been entered by the other school. If not the message reads "no data". The statistics given are temperature (high, low, noon), sunrise/sunset, sky conditions and precipitation. Schools can register to join the program, contributing data.

CNN - Weather

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16
Review: This section of the CNN website concentrates on current weather. There is a photograph for the main story of the day and links to other news items. It is possible to watch extended video clips of the actual CNN broadcasts, although these require an up to date Windows media Player. The site also has an interactive map which allows you to select the country you want weather for. In addition you can access area maps to show forecasts, temperatures and satellite images. Special reports give background information on hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires, each with relevant images. The site is searchable (across all of CNN and not just the weather section), and there are links to the other sections of the site. A useful site if studying a hurricane and you are needing up to date information.

Review: This site is the activities page of the classroom of the Future project run by Wheeling Jesuit University and NASA. It offers a comprehensive environment page containing a great deal of activities for teachers and pupils to develop their environment knowledge. The modules available are graded from ages 10 to 17 approximately, and cover topics like El Nino, volcanoes and hurricanes. Although design for US schools many of the materials are suitable for UK use. There are also teacher pages, most of which are not relevant for non US use.

Time and Space * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Time and Space

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is part of the Mr Dowling Browse the World series, which provides a vast range of resources for students. The Time and Space section includes such topics as the stars, longitude and latitude, seasons, time and map projections. All the information is presented in accessible language and is very well illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams. The information is an introduction to a topic only, and is therefore best used to introduce a topic and not for in depth study. Students may prefer to make use of the downloadable study guide, homework assignments and quiz, which are available in Acrobat or Word format. Teachers may appreciate the ability to download and alter using MS Word.
