Volcanoes – Can We Predict Volcanic Eruption

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This site is provided by Annenberg to support a television programme ("Earth Revealed") available on public broadcasting in the United States. The channel is also available online to broadband users although it has to be watched in its scheduled – it is not available on demand. This site has sections on magma, dynamic earth, hazards, forecasting and coping with the risk. There is also a section with related (mainly US) links. The site has FAQs to answer most potential queries and the materials are illustrated with photos and videos. The information is well presented but fairly basic.

Although design for US schools many of the materials are suitable for UK use. There are also teacher pages, most of which are not relevant for non US use.

About.com - Geology

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This area of the vast about.com site covers Geology and Earth Science, encompassing everything from outer space to the Earth’s fiery core, from the most ancient fossils to the landslides and earthquakes of today. There is information on dinosaurs and volcanoes. In addition there are articles on famous geologists, live cams of geo-places, glaciers, impact craters, the ocean, climate change, geologic maps, and galleries of mountains, minerals, and other images. All this information is provided in the form of a page of links, each provided with a short description, together with access to the internal about resources. A bit heavy on the advertising, and a bit earnest in the delivery, but still a good source of information.

Tramline - The Virtual Field Trips Site

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This is a site with a very original idea - prepare students for field trips by taking a virtual field trip in advance. Virtual field trips are designed to provide students with a sound online educational learning experience. These field trips (web tours) take students to some of the top web resources. A navigation section at the bottom allows to go to the next destination in the tour. Since it uses other web sources as the stages information is constantly kept up to date. Site includes virtual field trips on volcanoes, hurricanes, deserts, and salt marshes. You can also download a free trial version of tourmaker software to allow you or your pupils to create their own virtual tour. This is an excellent idea, the value of which is reduced by the lack of UK relevant field trips.

Natural Disasters

Mainly suitable for:
Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS2, KS3
Review: This is a site designed to educate through fun. The site has sixteen "things to do", all based on natural disasters - Mother Nature’s dark side. The term "things to do" is a bit flexible - mostly it means visiting another website with relevant information. The site has sections on natural disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves, twisters, tsunamis and volcanoes. Other topics include El Nino and how to prepare for a disaster. The pages are bright and well suited to upper primary or lower secondary pupils. There is also a teacher/parent section, which offers homework help and curriculum enhancers.
