World of Peter Rabbit

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: A site written in five languages built around Beatrix Potter and her famous characters Peter Rabbit and friends. There is a wealth of information about Beatrix’s early childhood and later life. This includes childhood sketches such as animals she kept as pets which gave her the ideas for the characters in her books as well as the landscapes she painted which formed the backgrounds to her pictures, as well as her picture letters and imaginary art. These would be a great resource for a teacher to use on an interactive whiteboard when teaching a Beatrix Potter theme as well as offering ideas for research by children themselves. The Fun section contains numerous activities to support the topic and use as cross curricular links – puzzles, dot to dots, online games, word searches, shape games, riddles, ecards, videos, stories, colouring pages and crafts. The site also offers competitions, details of related events and a place to purchase books and gifts.

Review: This is a very slick site, full of background music and lots for children to see. The site is obviously been written very professionally. The story section is great - with stories read to you as you follow the text. The only problem with it is the navigation - you have to use the virtual magnifier to read the text - this would be fine if the thing moved quickly or smoothly but it doesn't, so it just irritates as you have to guess where it will land. And when it does... the text is still tiny! The site is well worth visiting - with an interactive whiteboard, you will have a quiet class! The site also accepts poems from pupils to present on the site.

Review: A website dedicated to step-by-step poetry workshops on-line, how to write stories and how to write book reviews. This is a very child friendly site, which will look good on an interactive whiteboard. The children can hear a poet reading his own work and how to write a similar poem. The site is well worth a visit and would be a good resource to use as a whole class lesson. Karla Kuskin demonstrates how to use descriptive words to create powerful poems. There are also teacher guides associated with the lessons.

BBC Online - What's Your Picture Story * * * * *

BBC Online - What's Your Picture Story

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: Each month the BBC runs a competition in which they give children a chance to win an arty prize by writing a story based on a picture. The competition could form part of a literacy session at school or be done by children working at home. The activity is a useful one in that it links Art with Literacy. It asks children to look carefully at the picture then write a story using the prompts given. There are constraints in that children have to keep the story to 500 words maximum and it also gives children advice on how to write a good story – such as thinking about what will happen in the story and how it will end. It prompts children to think about the characters, who they are and what they do, and expand the last point by explaining why they do things. Taking part in the competition enables children to write for a different audience and of course if they win their story will be displayed on the website

Review: This is a fun and informative site and full of interactive activities. These activities incude ; a printable word search, a guessing game, re-size Alice, See Alice by the very realistic looking pool of tears. My personal favourites was the long and sad tale where you can complete the tale by selecting words to finish the story, so no writing is needed. Everything you want to know about Alice in Wonderland can be found on the site it has information about the designer and you can even send a e-card or purchase a rubber stamp!
