Review: This is a super interactive alphabetical ordering game for Year 2/3/4. The task is to help the pig put the words in the correct order alphabetically. There are 10 differentiated questions which get progressively harder. The task starts with initial letter, then extends to second letter as well and continues to fourth letter to establish order. This activity is designed to be used onscreen or on an IWB. This is part of a series of games from primary resources.co.uk and there are some great links here.

Review: This is an excellent, colourful animated alphabet book that can be used to teach children about the alphabet. It would be a wonderful resource to use on an interactive whiteboard with the whole class. There are opportunities to look at each letter shape, capital and small, read a word beginning with that letter and see an animated image. Children could be asked to say which letter would come next in the alphabet before moving onto the next page. The book would be enhanced by the class discussion that could accompany it. The activity would also be a good one for children to use on small computer screens, either on their own or working with a partner. They would be lots of opportunities to talk about the pictures, so developing their speaking and listening skills as well as learning to recognise the letters and read words.

Review: An excellent site for developing Literacy matched closely to the objectives for Years one and two. The games and activities are designed to help children develop their knowledge of phonics and how these are represented in written form. The games and activities on this site are divided into 5 modules which each focus on a different area of phonics work. They can be used for individual children on a classroom computer or as part of a whole class lesson in an ICT suite. They also lend themselves well to use on an interactive whiteboard during the Introduction or other parts of a Literacy lesson. The site has a section for parents and teachers showing how the activities relate to the National Curriculum and explaining how they work. It offers interactive games, printable worksheets and resources, lesson plans and a gallery where children can display their work for a wider audience. The strength of the site is that it offers activities for use online and also away from the computer. Also a good resource for Special Needs

Teaching Literacy in Year 1 Term 2

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1
Review: This part of the Literacy Matters website offers medium and weekly plans for teaching Literacy with Year One children. The plans meet the range of objectives in Term 2 and offer ready made plans, support and ideas to teachers of Year One children. The weekly plans are detailed, setting out clearly the teaching objectives for that lesson and cover all parts of the Literacy Lesson. They start with a phonics section, then a class session which is linked to a book [which can be bought online if teachers so wish]. The main page gives teachers a quick resume of what the book contains so teachers can make some judgement as to the suitability of title for the class and children involved. For those needing help with Talk for Writing, Shared Writing and Supported Composition this site is a must. Additional material can be purchased in the form of CD roms to support the text and there is also some free material available.

Spelling and Rhyme

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: This is a worksheet that is split into 4 parts, 3 tasks and one extension activity. It asks children to use a dictionary to find words that end in the letter ´o´, asks children to find words that rhyme with give words as long as they end in ´o´, then asks children to look at words that end in ´ow´ for the ´o´ sound. It goes on to ask children to find ´-ough´words and finally as an extension activity asks the children to find/think of other words that will fit into the table of rhyming words that they have created that dont end with the letters given. The activity would suit children at the upper end of KS1 or lower KS2 as an activity for children to complete independently, probably in several stages rather than all at once. It would be useful perhaps as an activity to reinforce recent work taught for the children to show their understanding of rhyming words and the different ways that words can be spelt.

LearningPlanet.com - Alphabet Action

Mainly suitable for:
KS1
Review: This free online game from LearningPlanet.com can be used to teach the names of the letters of the alphabet with the reinforcement of a picture that begins with the letter as its initial sound. This could be played by a child independently or with a partner for letter name reinforcement but would probably be better used as a class activity on an interactive whiteboard where teachers could extend the game to cover the sound that each letter makes as would be the learning intention in the phonic part of a Literacy lesson. When each picture appears it is accompanied by a word that matches the picture but this is not read so to get the best from the game and avoid confusion teachers would need to read the word or encourage children to do so themselves. It could also be extended by asking children if they could think of any more objects that begin with that letter and sound.

All You Ever Wanted To Know About The Alphabet

Mainly suitable for:
KS1
Review: Mrs. Alphabet’s site is filled with ideas for teachers and parents about different ways to teach the alphabet to children. There are many ideas that will appeal to young children and make learning the alphabet fun, such as singing games and building towers with alphabet blocks to learn alphabet order. The music on the homepage can be rather annoying after the first visit so turn down the volume and just click on each link which will take you to more ideas. The site offers a range of ways to learn about the alphabet including tactile learning, so emphasising that children learn in different ways. Teachers would need to spend time making resources because the ideas are here but nothing that can be printed off and used. However, in an early years unit these ideas could be used at different times and children could not fail to learn the letters of the alphabet

Review: Three worksheets based on using the short ‘oo’ sound that could be printed off and photocopied for children to use in group sessions for phonics. On the first sheet children are asked to put in the missing vowels ‘oo’ then draw a picture in the box and are also asked to write clues for some of the words. This activity is probably more suitable for year 2 children than year one who are just meeting the sound for the first time in the summer term.As the other two pages contain identical activities teachers might want to just select one sheet only as children would not continue to be engaged when tackling all sheets. They might also want to adapt the activity sheet in order to differentiate it for different children or to make it more appealing.

Review: Cloze procedure worksheet putting the missing words containing ‘ou’ sound in the sentences. Children are expected to copy the passage into their books, underlining the missing words. The worksheet would probably be more useful if adapted, made more appealing and perhaps written in print large enough so that children could write the missing words on the sheet instead of copying the whole passage. Teachers might also want to give a list of possible words from which children could choose.
