Urban Studies – Investigating London

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16, Undergraduate, Postgraduate
Review: Linked to Royal Geographical Society. Excellent resource for older students on Urban Studies. Map of all London Boroughs. Land use in the Boroughs, and Members of Parliament. This is a great geography / social studies project. You can split up London and compare different parts of London such as a district from the Wenst end and the East end etc. I think students would be really interested in this, and hence more motivated to produce exciting presentations.

The tour can be taken in its entirety or you can opt for the North island, South Island or beach options. Other links take you to a regularly updated feature article and general tourist information. The site is clean and fast, and there are some wonderful images. A search engine facilities information retrieval.

Maps - From the ABOUT web pages

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site is part of the about.com stable, and comes under its geography banner. This part of the site has two pages of links to links to sites which provide maps online, each with a brief description of the content. As with all about pages there is a side bar with further links to related sites and topics. On this site they include world atlases, blank maps, a free geography email course and a series of geographical articles. In common with all about sites there is a proliferation of sponsored links and adverts, and the articles all tend to have a naive earnestness.

Review: This is the web catalogue for the Perry-Castaneda map collection at the University of Texas. This particular page lists maps which are no longer available and which can only be found online here. Most of theses are US maps. The navigation menu allows you to go elsewhere in the library where you can view maps for particular regions or themes. The site also has an incredibly comprehensive list of links to online maps elsewhere on the internet. Unfortunately there is little description so most will be a case of click and see.

Welcome To MapQuest!

Mainly suitable for:

Review: MapQuest is a "find it" site. This is the homepage which offers a location search, a map search and a route planner. The site is on a United States setting by default, but other countries can be chosen. This makes the site a useful source of maps. In addition there´s a local city guide where you can get up to date information on local news and events; travel deals, travel guides, and various commercial links for hotels, airfares etc. While is is a useful site it has limited educational value.

Review: This site is part of National Geograhic.com, and is a wonderful resource for anyone seeking a map. This superb collection has all the published National Geographic maps and some more besides. Some are printable (they will print best if you have a large format plotter) and the list includes some excellent satellite images. The printable maps are draw in black and white and are searchable by location menus. Other maps can be viewed online, or copied and pasted to view later. Other features available on the site include map ordering, conservation maps and country profile. Where is That

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2, KS3
Review: This is an interactive site that gives visitors the opportunity to practice some geography skills. The game is easy to play - you choose a continent and the computer shows you a map. At level one you need to choose the country name from a choice of three. In level two you need to spell the name. In level three you are given a capital and have to choose the country from the options on screen, while level four sees you enter the correctly spelled word. Level five is a map again, this time you need to type in the country and capital names. The game keeps score so you can see if you improve. This is a good way to practice for facts and figures tests.

World Roof

Mainly suitable for:

Review: This This site gives you the highest and lowest locations for most countries around the world. Getting the information is a bit of a chore. You need to choose the continent your country is in, and then click for a highest or lowest table to appear and look for the country. Then you have to do it again to find out the opposite. The information is given in feet and metres, and there is a link top the alta vista search engine to find you images of the location. The site also has some fairly standard maps, and claims to have a weather link, which leads instead to a description of the countries location. Not a great site.

Welcome to the Compass Lesson!

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is designed to be a basic learning site to help students learn about the compass. With such a simple premise you would expect the site to be aimed at younger pupils, with a corresponding vocabulary. Instead the on line lesson goes into detail about secondary intercardinal points, and degree number values. The lesson is linear but students can go back if necessary up to the final page where a review is given in quiz form. This site has a good idea, but fails to deliver on it.
