Review: Part of teachnet site which covers many areas of the curriculum, this link has an activity for mapping the school. A clear activity with easy to follow instructions.

About.com - Geology

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This area of the vast about.com site covers Geology and Earth Science, encompassing everything from outer space to the Earth’s fiery core, from the most ancient fossils to the landslides and earthquakes of today. There is information on dinosaurs and volcanoes. In addition there are articles on famous geologists, live cams of geo-places, glaciers, impact craters, the ocean, climate change, geologic maps, and galleries of mountains, minerals, and other images. All this information is provided in the form of a page of links, each provided with a short description, together with access to the internal about resources. A bit heavy on the advertising, and a bit earnest in the delivery, but still a good source of information.

Review: This site is part of the about.com stable, and comes under its geography banner. This useful site has two pages of links to articles related to GIS, GPS and technology in geography, each with a brief description of the article. As with all about pages there is a side bar with further links to related sites and topics. On this site they include world atlases, blank maps, a free geography email course and a series of geographical articles. In common with all about sites there is a proliferation of sponsored links and adverts, and the articles all tend to have a naive earnestness. However this does provide a good source of information.

Mainly suitable for:

Review: This section of the CNN website concentrates on current weather. There is a photograph for the main story of the day and links to other news items. It is possible to watch extended video clips of the actual CNN broadcasts, although these require an up to date Windows media Player. The site also has an interactive map which allows you to select the country you want weather for. In addition you can access area maps to show forecasts, temperatures and satellite images. Special reports give background information on hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires, each with relevant images. The site is searchable (across all of CNN and not just the weather section), and there are links to the other sections of the site. A useful site if studying a hurricane and you are needing up to date information.

National Geographic Kids

Mainly suitable for:

Review: As the title suggests this is the on line version of the excellent National Geographic magazine for children. The site is designed to appeal to the MTV generation with lots of colour and moving images. Most icons respond by dancing or spinning when the mouse passes over them. The site has a huge amount of quality material, presented in a child friendly way. The homepage has frequently updated features and links to various NG magazines, games, activities, a colouring book, a geography challenge, homework help and maps. Parents looking over the child’s shoulder can get a newsletter and an education guide. Teachers can also access lesson plans (which are designed for the US system). You could visit this site every day for a month and still find something new - it is superb for younger children.

Where is that?

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is a multi level online game which tests a student’s knowledge of countries. On the opening page players have a choice of continents plus the United States and a world option. There are five levels available for each option. On level one a country is highlighted on a regional map and a choice of four possibilities is given. If an incorrect answer is chosen the correct answer is given and a mark is put in the incorrect column, Right answers obviously score in the correct column, allowing students to play against either themselves or their friends. In level two no choices are given and the name must be spelled correctly. In level three a capital city is given and a multiple choice answer chosen. In level four the same questions require an answer to be typed correctly. Finally, level five needs the student to correctly enter the name of the country and its capital to get a point. The game is quick to learn and fast to play and should aid knowledge retention.

City Population

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4 , Post 16, Undergraduate
Review: This site aims to give the population and area for every country in the world, together with the populations for most agglomerations, major cities and administrative areas. Clicking start on the homepage leads to an overview from where cities or countries can be chosen from menus or an interactive map. Figures are updated regularly - at the time of visit the country figures were only 7 weeks old. The level of detail in the statistics is astounding - the UK has figures for all towns over 200000 inhabitants. Maps open in a separate window to show the location of any city you select. This is a superb site for statistical data.

Primary Resources Geography

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: A page of general Geography resources to support teachers in their delivery of this subject. It includes free worksheets, lesson plans, activities and teaching ideas for primary and foundation teachers. One very useful resource is the table of weblinks for QCA geography which links topics and web links with a brief description of what they contain and matches them to the relevant year group. A number of resources, such as the weather records, would save teachers preparation time. The activities that include charts and tables are good in that they offer teachers a way of recording what children have seen and provide an inspiration of how teachers could tackle a project in their own class. There is also a great idea for a game suitable for Year 1 pupils to try to reinforce their geographical vocabulary and their understanding of some physical geography terms. There are a number of ways that teachers can embed ICT into the geography curriculum.

Time and Space

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is part of the Mr Dowling Browse the World series, which provides a vast range of resources for students. The Time and Space section includes such topics as the stars, longitude and latitude, seasons, time and map projections. All the information is presented in accessible language and is very well illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams. The information is an introduction to a topic only, and is therefore best used to introduce a topic and not for in depth study. Students may prefer to make use of the downloadable study guide, homework assignments and quiz, which are available in Acrobat or Word format. Teachers may appreciate the ability to download and alter using MS Word.

World Atlas

Review: Sometimes you come across a site that really needs no description - this is one. As the title suggests this is an online world atlas. The site has an atlas on the opening page. Clicking on a continent brings up a more detailed continental map, together with some basic geographical information and a list of other maps available for that area. Outline maps are available to download or print. The site also lets users ask geographical questions - this has not been tested as to quality and response time. The maps are of varying scales but they are all fairly basic, making them more suited for primary schools. The site has various other geographical information such as latitute/longitude and tsunamis.
