The Roald Dahl Glossary

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS2
Review: A simple but useful site which could be used to complete a biography of Roald Dahl with KS2 children. The site provides a comprehensive list of his books and the autobiographies he wrote. I particularly like the report on his life and the clear timeline. There are six different quizes each about a different Roald Dahl book and images designed by the author with overviews of some of his stories.

There are also useful links to other teacher support websites american and english sites listed.

Who2 Profile Dr. Seuss

Mainly suitable for:
Foundation Stage - Preschool, KS1, KS2
Review: Part of a bigger Who2 website. This page gives a very brief history of the life of Dr Seuss. Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated nearly 50 books of quirky children's verse during his lifetime, including ‘The Cat in the Hat’. Also gives a list of his vital statistics, which are hyperlinked to others born at same time, from same city etc. Has useful links to more detailed sites about the author. Text is high ability. Chilldren would probably enjoy far more the link to Seussville! Lots of distracting adverts.

Missing ´ou´ words

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: Cloze procedure worksheet putting the missing words containing ‘ou’ sound in the sentences. Children are expected to copy the passage into their books, underlining the missing words. The worksheet would probably be more useful if adapted, made more appealing and perhaps written in print large enough so that children could write the missing words on the sheet instead of copying the whole passage. Teachers might also want to give a list of possible words from which children could choose.

Children's Books

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2, KS3
Review: Children the world over enjoy stories. Here´s a list of website links leading to books and information on them. But... The web site is unfortunately quite unattractive and certainly only an adult with patience to learn and find what there is will go through the links. There is too much to see and the organisation is confusing. It is encumbered with unrelated ads which are unlikely to be of much interest to anyone searching in this area. The site has the feel of untapped resources but they are difficult to find. The need to be commercial has killed opportunities to show more interest in the content and subject matter. It may be a useful site for a librarian and the owner of a bookshop but few others.

What's In A Name

Mainly suitable for:
KS2
Review: This site is a lesson plan that requires students to use the internet to find information about the origin of their names. Three links to relevent sites are listed. Unfortunately none of them works. There is nothing wrong with the lesson plan, but having read this review, most teachers will be able to work out what they and the students will have to do without visiting the site. It is too simple to bother with.
