Review: A resource available on the excellent Primary Resources website. This set of spelling worksheets asks the children to underline the words that are spelt incorrectly and write the correct spelling at the end of the line with the use of a dictionary if necessary. The worksheet is in PDF format and needs to be printed for use in the classroom. It could be used in the classroom or it would be useful as a homework exercise to consolidate work carried out in the classroom.

Review: Little Explorers Picture Dictionary can be viewed in English or as a multi-lingual dictionary in a variety of languages. To browse through the dictionary, click on a letter in the alphabet at the top of the page and you’ll see a page of words that start with that letter. Each word is used in a meaningful example sentence. Many of the words have links to more information and educational activities, games, and nursery rhymes. This is a wonderful dictionary for browsing or finding out more information about a topic such as birds.

Spelling and Rhyme * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Spelling and Rhyme

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: This is a worksheet that is split into 4 parts, 3 tasks and one extension activity. It asks children to use a dictionary to find words that end in the letter ´o´, asks children to find words that rhyme with give words as long as they end in ´o´, then asks children to look at words that end in ´ow´ for the ´o´ sound. It goes on to ask children to find ´-ough´words and finally as an extension activity asks the children to find/think of other words that will fit into the table of rhyming words that they have created that dont end with the letters given. The activity would suit children at the upper end of KS1 or lower KS2 as an activity for children to complete independently, probably in several stages rather than all at once. It would be useful perhaps as an activity to reinforce recent work taught for the children to show their understanding of rhyming words and the different ways that words can be spelt.

Review: This site provides primary resources for English, including word level activity worksheets. It is part of a comprehensive resource web site for primary school teachers and covers all subjects taught in schools. The English section is divided into word level, text level and miscellaneous resources. Each subsection includes useful worksheets and activity ideas. As the worksheets are offered by different contributors, there is no one consistent approach and most of these worksheets are very simple. However, if used as assessment or practice materials and incorporated appropriately into lesson plans, they save the teachers valuable development time. The site is well-designed, cheerful-looking, easy to use and offer lots of useful materials and ideas. Hosted by RM and approved by NgfL, it certainly is something teachers like myself would want to refer to over and over again as a resource bank.

There is a range of resources here including lesson ideas and worksheets. However, as the worksheets are mostly in PDF format, they can't be edited and you will have to search carefully to find ones that exactly match your students. There are word, sentence and text level resources covering the primary years. This site is worth a look if you want a worksheet.

Review: Part of the Teaching Ideas website this page is devoted to links of activities and ideas to develop reading skills as well as other useful Literacy sites. Teachers can quickly find what is relevant to them by looking at the links that are divided into Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Once they have followed the link the activity can be printed off or downloaded. The resources take the form of Powerpoints or pdf files. The resources have been sent in by teachers but do vary in detail and quality. However they are excellent starter ideas that can be adapted or could inspire a teacher to adapt them for his/her own classroom situation. There are some good ideas for teaching reading through other areas such as using clay to model letters and mapping stories as a way of showing what happened.

LITTLE EXPLORERS Picture Dictionary

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: An online picture dictionary that can be accessed in different languages. E.g. a child learning French could access the French/English version and see words in both languages – a good activity for someone beginning to learn a foreign language. Used as an ordinary dictionary children will be able to develop a range of skills. Children will find the dictionary easy to access by clicking on the letter of the alphabet for the word needed. Having chosen the correct initial letter they are rewarded with a picture and a word underneath so they are practising word recognition. For younger children the dictionary activities will work best when directed by the teacher such as a scavenger hunt for weather words where children are given a clue and the initial sound and they have to find the matching weather. Older children will be able to use the dictionary to its full advantage – by clicking on the picture or word they will link to another page or site in order to extend their knowledge
