About - Environmental Issues - Multimedia

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site, formerly dedicated to Multimedia, has been rebranded as Environmental Issues under the About banner. As with all About pages there is plenty of earnest editorial, lots of links to relevant resources, current news items and adverts! The Essentials area on the site has a glossary of environmental terms, images, alerts, archived materials, and, somewhat bizarrely, a water consumption calculator. Essential? Maybe not. This site also has an environmental forum. You can enter as a guest to read posts, but you must register (it is free) to contribute. There are over fifty different forum discussions ongoing at any one time. There is a tendency to view everything from a US perspective, but if you persevere you will find your way to some good resource materials.

Cultural & Human Geography

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This site is part of the about.com stable, and comes under its geography banner. This part of the site has two pages of links to articles related (sometimes only tenuously) to cultural or human topics, each with a brief description of the article. As with all about pages there is a side bar with further links to related sites and topics. On this site they include world atlases, blank maps, a free geography email course and a series of geographical articles. In common with all about sites there is a proliferation of sponsored links and adverts, and the articles all tend to have a naive earnestness.

Environmental Resources Center

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: This is the home site for the environmental resources centre at the University of Wisconsin. Much of the content on the site is directly related to the state itself - e.g. invasive species, pollution prevention and the waste collection program. There is a student resource available on site named "Give Water A Hand". This is a national education program to get young people involved in looking after the waterways of the US in their local area. This has a free downloadable guide, with teacher and pupil versions. This can be adapted to look after a body of water in this country as a school or youth group project.

plants guide book- lesson plan

Mainly suitable for:
KS2
Review: This is a single page lesson plan from a United States school aimed at teachers of level 4-6 (which presumably transfers to years 4 - 6 England/P4 -6 Scotland). The theme of the lesson is constructing a guidebook in environmental awareness. There appears to be a fair amount of activity for such a short article and there is little on methodologies or assessment. This is definitely more suited to US teachers.

weather or not page

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This site is part of the Exploring the Environment series, and is US based. The front page is a little confusing as there are a number of icons that look like they should be links but aren't. The working icons are labelled Situation, Monitoring Resources and Satellite Picture. The first deals with weather prediction but has no real content. The second is the most useful as it has lots of current satellite images, all of the US. The third has an explanation of satellite technology. There is also a teachers section which is very comprehensive, but again is US orientated. Finally there is a link back to the homepage of Exploring the Environment which allows other topics to be accessed.

´´U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Outre.´´

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3
Review: This is a site run by the United States geological Survey. It contains details about a set of pupil posters designed to attract interest to water resources/ conservation. The posters are available to US schools only, but some of them can be viewed online, although the imagew are very small. This makes the resource almost valueless to UK visitors. The site can also be used to access other, more worthwhile, areas of the USGS site, where there are a number of decent reseources available.

lesson plan- conserving natural resources

Mainly suitable for:
KS2
Review: This site provides a Word document which is an Environmental Studies lesson plan, with a detailed activity to show children importance of conserving natural resources and habitats. The lesson requires resources which are only available to teachers in the United States, making the lesson plan impractical for three UK without major alterations. Although it is aimed at grades 4 - 6 the activities involved appear to be at a more elementary level.
