This Fractions CD is one in a series of CDs that cover a variety of topics in numeracy at KS1 and KS2. The Sums CD details the areas of the National Curriculum included, which are changing crude fraction such as 33/8 to the equivalent mixed number 4 1/8 and vice versa, reducing a fraction to its simplest form by cancelling common factors in the numerator and denominator, ordering fractions such as 2/3, ¾ and 5/6 by converting them to fractions with a common denominator, and positioning them on a number line and finally using a fraction as an operator to find fractions of numbers or quantities.

It also fits in with The National Numeracy Strategy Unit Plans Year 6 Autumn Term Unit 4.

Children that find maths difficult respond very well to manipulative activities like the ones on the Sums CD particularly with the instant feedback.

Number It - One is a very simple to use program which has activities for learning and consolidating number. Skills practised whilst doing the tasks are number recognition, counting and matching, ordinal and cardinal numbers.

The activities can be pre-determined to use number sets, numerals or names.
It is a relatively short program in each area, so can be useful for quick assessment of skills. The graphics are simple, bright and clear with no clutter to distract from the task and the program is a very useful consolidation tool. There is a demonstration of each activity to aid a child's learning which kicks in after a student has had three unsuccessful attempts.

The program should appeal to children because of its simplicity and ease of use and to teachers because it is self-sustaining, self-checking and keeps a record of progress.

The CD provides a reasonably priced, useful database of information on a wide range of food and food types. It can be used by students to analyse their own diets, or to compare the nutritional values of other diets. It can also be used as a database for vitamins listing where they are found, signs of deficiency and why they are needed.

A useful aspect of the program is the assessment of body weight based on age, height and size of the students. Example simulations are given so that personal details need not be entered by pupils to whom this might be a sensitive issue.

Using the software enables teachers to encourage pupils to use different sources of information. It encourages pupils to be discerning in their research, and the information gathered could be displayed in a variety of different formats.

This interactive CD-ROM is designed to support revision of the Graphic Products GCSE written paper, using bold bright colours, interactive interface and appropriate clear graphics along side comprehensive detailed text. It has an eye catching, easily navigated format of 10 broad topics further divided into sub sections giving students bite sized chunks of information - all accessed from a standardised activity menu. Each page is clearly presented, allowing quick navigation to relevant sections.

The CD enables a range of uses from independent individual revision to whole class activity via an electronic white board. It could also be used in starter/plenary exercises or producing homework and as support for ongoing coursework. The software produces a range of printable resources, including a revision planner available in 'word' format for individuals to log progress either electronically or as a printed hard copy.
