"Study Skills Success"
is a complete study skills course aimed
at GCSE. It covers lectures, note-taking,
analysing an assignment, planning and writing
it, as well as developing students' ability
to improve their grammar and broaden their
vocabulary. An accompanying website provides
extension activities and links to other
sites of general academic interest.
To make full use of the CDs technology
and web support, it should be networked,
although it can be used as a standalone
resource. The benefits of networking include
the ability to access the assessment program
and see each student's progress at a glance.
All sections are bright and attractive,
and instructions on screen are clear and
helpful.
|
This consists of
a set of CD ROM activities designed to support
Discovery World books. The texts are clearly
levelled and cover all the different non-fiction
types that children are required to cover
in years 1 and 2. This is clearly shown on
the teacher section, where you can find planning
tables linked to the NLS.
Each CD provides two activities for every
Discovery World title, and a range of additional
generic activities. It is intended to be
used as follow up activities to guided reading
sessions, though it can be used in many
different ways.
A record keeping system allows teachers
to track the progress of each child effectively
and there is the (teacher controlled) option
to print a certificate after each activity.
Discovery World is quick and simple for
the children to access with little or no
teacher input.

| 'Cut, Paste and
Surf' offers a range of text-based activities
designed to improve pupils' English and ICT
skills. There are ten projects, a number of
which adopt the approach of the student as
the researcher. For example, pupils can create
a leaflet, design a presentation, or construct
a website based on one of the major writers
from the National Curriculum. Within each
topic area, there are a number of activities,
which develop pupils' skills.
The software has a simple and straightforward
layout, which pupils find easy to use. By
building in discussion points and key questions
into the lesson, teachers will also be able
to ensure that the text has been read and
understood by all learners.
Cut, Paste and Surf will be a valuable
addition to any English teacher, because
of the flexibility of the product.
|
This CD Rom contains
materials to support Longman's Literacy course
at Year 9. Each of the 12 units is sub-divided
with editable resources and activities to
cover text level, word level, sentence level,
speaking and listening and writing tasks.
These resources are multi-functional and
can be photocopied, used as OHP's, projected
onto a whiteboard, or withheld by the teacher
for personal use. As such, they are a timesaving
resource for teachers.
The links to the National Curriculum and
Literacy Targets are comprehensive and detailed,
and make clear all objectives and learning
aims.
The entire product (Set of Pupil Books
and Teacher Files on CD) provides over 100
hours of lessons, covering all aspects of
the National Curriculum Literacy Strategy,
as well as providing valuable resources
to support the teaching.

| This is a general
monitoring system that allows the teacher
to monitor what is being carried out on each
of the connected workstations. One of the
features it has is that it allows the teacher
to display their screen on the students' desktops.
Therefore tasks can be demonstrated in real
time. Teachers can communicate with a single
student, the whole class or small groups to
give additional guidance or suggest how a
task can be developed without any others in
the group being aware.
It is possible to only allow certain applications
/ websites to be used for a particular lesson
and teachers can monitor student activity,
as the application will register any applications
open.
This is a very useful piece of software,
for example, it allows file collection/
distribution meaning no more photocopied
sheets and simplifying collection of work.

Espresso is an online
interactive resource service, available on
subscription and updated weekly. It provides
the pupil and teacher with a vast bank of
stimulus material comprising of short video
clips, fact sheets, newspaper articles, worksheets/planning
materials, word games, assemblies, quizzes,
news, picture and photo. Although it is not
available for home use by the children on
the Internet teachers have access to their
own area (the Staffroom) from home for planning
purposes. There is also a weekly newsletter
sent to teachers to inform them of the most
recent updates.
Pupils find Espresso very easy to use and
are able to access and search the pages
with the minimum of instruction. Espresso
is very interactive and children learn and
progress at their own pace. Information
can be easily exported to form the basis
of research.
