fastracking
By Sean Russell Question:
My headteacher mentioned to me in passing that I should consider the government's
Fast Track scheme for teachers. I have been teaching for a few years and I only
thought this scheme was available for new graduates entering the profession. Could
you enlighten me?
Answer: The DfES's Fast Track scheme started
by providing graduates and those outside teaching
with a scheme which would guarantee fast promotion
and higher pay during their careers, provided
they keep to agreed targets.
The model is similar to the Civil
Service Fast Stream which has been running for years. The good news for you is
that it will be extended to serving teachers from Autumn 2001 with a view to successful
applicants taking up Fast Track post from September 2002. The idea is to provide
accelerated pay and promotion for highly talented serving teachers.
Initial applications will be assessed against a set of Fast Track competencies
and values. The next stage will involve three computer-based tests. Those who
get this far will be invited to a two-day assessment centre. If
this all sounds a bit scary, take comfort from the fact that this is the standard
selection route for graduates entering a range of professions from the Civil Service
to management consultancy to human resources. Indeed, the scheme is part of a
general policy by the government to raise to status of management in teaching
to that of other graduate jobs.
The details of the application and selection
procedures are due to be released soon both in
the press and on the DfES
website. However, to get an idea of some of
the values and competencies other employers are
looking for, have a look at some of the big company
websites.
And if you really feel like trying your hand
at some of the possible computer tests that the
DfEE might be using, go to the University of Bristol's
Careers Service website. Once accepted onto
the scheme, you will get additional professional
development, mentoring and networking opportunities
as well as double pay increments provided you
meet the targets agreed with your head teacher.
Headteachers will identify Fast Track posts
(normally two year posts) in agreement with Fast
Track central management. These posts will be
advertised among Fast Track candidates and then
application for the posts will be through the
school's own regular procedures. The extra cost
of employing Fast Track teachers will be borne
by central government. Keep an eye out for further
announcement about the scheme.
