Eating out: The Granary is near; serves nice, reasonably priced food, good (bottled) beer and allows dogs. Most of the local pubs do nice food, too, till 9PM or thereabouts. Red Indigo - excellent indian on Castle Street: reserve a table (you may need to) on 01497 821 999. The Globe on the corner of Heol y Dwr - newly re-opened, arty and nice with garden. The Old Black Lion – nice beer, quiet, posh food but not our favourite: left out of the gate and walk 100 yards – on left. Three Tuns – by the bridge, the closest pub and good! Perfect for Sunday lunch. |
Kilverts – nice beer, nice food, good atmosphere, can be busy later; also has restaurant: left out of gate, first right, 100 yards on left. |

Back Garden: there’s a courtyard garden up the steps and round the corner on the right hand side. Garden furniture folded up in shed. Key to the back door is usually hanging up on the notice board in the kitchen. Rubbish: collections are on Fridays – put bag outside in the front garden if you’re leaving that day, otherwise, leave in shed or take home. Heating and hot water: boiler in airing cupboard in bathroom. Hot water on demand, turn on heating with second knob in from the left (behind flap at the bottom) – one turn click clockwise (obvious when you look at it). Set temperature with furthest knob in. Do not turn off the main switch in the airing cupboard this will turn out the pilot light and it isn't easy to get back on! Fire: kindling is in the basket next to the fire, with logs outside the back door and/or in the garden. Firelighters are in the cupboard behind the basket and matches on the shelves above (check the tankard). Please put ashes in the metal bin outside the backdoor. Axe hanging in shed (high up on left) - you may need to chop some logs up! Always use the fireguard when you are not in the room - wooden floor! When you leave: please strip beds and put any used linen in the bath. Walks and activities: Canoeing is available from several places – they pick you up and bring you back – details in the booklets on the shelves, but Paddles and Pedals, over the bridge, on the left is easiest (and you end up at a riverside pub). Various other activities listed in the booklets, too. The Warren is a local beauty spot with a shingle beach on the river bank and big meadow behind – great for sitting and reading the papers (there’s a fold up sofa under the shelves in the fireplace), playing football etc. Right out of the gate, left on the main road, first right towards the bridge then take the path down and under the bridge – its about 10 mins walk upstream along the river bank. Another good place for views and picnicking high up out of the wind is the Roundabout in the Begwns (National Trust) and nearby lake – it’s a 10 minute drive, but very lovely – map stuck up on kitchen notice board: Over bridge, left at main road, turn right at Llowes, follow signs for Peigncastle. The Radnor Arms pub at the bottom of the hill up does good food and has a garden with excellent views. Hay Bluff and Offa’s Dyke path – direct walks out of town with stunning views. Swimming: There is a public pool at the primary school, but also a nice one at The Seven Stars (near the bridge) which also has a sauna, but you'll need to book for either - it's small and cosy! Alternatively, there's the Warren,,, Playground, football etc: there's a small playground and a large field (sometimes has sheep), with a good stream at the far end for children to play about in at Black Lion Green - head left out of the gate and turn left after the Black Lion pub, then head down and over the bridge. Fishing permits on the Wye for the day can also be bought in town, at Paddles and Pedals. Bedding, towels, iron, ironing board etc: in the airing cupboard. |
||||
Laundry: the washing machine also has a tumble drier – instructions for this and anything else on the shelves. It does seem to tumble dry very hot, so beware! Iron and board in the airing cupboard. Airer in the garden shed. There's also a laundry in town. General: Please use both locks when you leave, replace keys in the safelock box and roll the combination. Note: there is no TV, telephone or microwave, so if you need any these, bring your own! Mobile networks are unreliable in Hay (Vodaphone and T-Mobile seem best) but there is a phone box on Broad Street and Wifi connection in The Granary or the Globe (or use the library if you've no PC with you. Guest book: if you get chance, please get us a second hand book (there’s a £1 book shop at the other end of town) and leave us a message in it! Directions & parking: We tend to come along the A438 from Hereford towards Brecon. Keep following the signs to Brecon, Hay on Wye will be signposted off this road at the 50p toll bridge over the Wye at Clifford (very pretty) and again at Clyro, which brings you over the main B4351 bridge into Hay. Smallbrook Terrace is the tall white terrace of four houses on Heol y Dwr, on the LHS as you turn in from Broad Street. Parking is on the road. When the road is fully parked, pass the house on your LHS, take your next left and there will be parking on the road here.
