Aimed at Primary headteachers, other senior staff in primary schools who are performance management team leaders, and teachers Course details The single most important factor in ensuring a good education for every child is that they have the best teaching possible. Teachers are a school’s greatest asset and must be supported in every way to ensure that they fulfil their potential. This course underpins the assertion that ‘The quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its teachers’.
This one day course is designed to help senior staff gain a thorough understanding of the new Teacher Standards (effective from September 2012) and the related arrangements for performance management. The course will help participants to use the new Teacher Standards to underpin appraisal and performance management procedures in school. This will include the latest information regarding the proposed ‘Master Teacher Standard’. The training includes reference to the DfE’s model policy and refers throughout to the recently revised (January 2012) Teacher Appraisal and Capability regulations. The course looks at the use of lesson observation as part of the performance management process, and also provides participants with suggested templates to support the process of performance management. By the end of the course participants will be familiar with the relevant regulations, will be clear as to an effective approach to managing the appraisal process in school and will understand the skills required as part of the appraiser/appraisee relationship. Tutor Adrian F Adrian is an experienced Inspector, primary Headteacher and consultant. Following fifteen years as a successful Headteacher of three primary schools, Adrian has worked as an independent consultant since 2009, supporting school improvement. He has worked in high achieving schools as well as in schools needing improvement. He has been seconded to two schools placed in Ofsted categories. Adrian is an experienced school inspector and lead inspector and is also an accredited School Improvement Partner. His areas of expertise lie across the primary curriculum. Since finishing Headship he has worked extensively with schools and clusters across the country providing consultancy and training, particularly focused on developing the skills and expertise of senior leadership teams in monitoring and evaluation. His record with the company is exemplary. Course Objectives By the end of the day, delegates will: • Have a clear understanding of the Teachers’ Standards (1 September 2012) and the ways in which these could be used to support a school’s performance management process. • Be familiar with the Teacher Appraisal and Capability regulations (published in January 2012 and effective from 1 September 2012) and the processes required in school in order for these to operate smoothly. • Have a clear understanding of the latest information available related to the proposed ‘Master Teacher Standard’ and the implication for schools. • Have discussed a number of ways of collecting and collating information about a teacher’s performance and effectiveness over the course of a school year, in the context of the new regulations. • Have discussed possible formats/templates that could be used to support the performance management process in school. • Have a clear view as to the skills and approaches that are part of an effective appraiser/appraisee relationship, including the use of lesson observations.
