  Phonics Bug
The Phonics Bug programme is provided by Pearson and is eligible under the match funding from the government. It is a fantastic resource whereby you can allocate books online for children on an individual basis. The books can be chosen by book band or letters and sounds phase. Children can access it from home where they have their own password to log into their webpage which displays their allocated books.  Five books can be seen at one time but the teacher can allocate up to 15. When ... More ...

  Floppy´s Phonics reading programme
Floppy´s Phonics is a section of the Oxford Reading Tree reading programme. It aims to address gaps in the reading scheme by providing books that are purely phonic based. It links in clearly with the other ORT books and fits into current ORT stages and book bands, dovetailing with other reading schemes. The stories offer a variety of situations that are familiar to children, with engaging tales and characters that children have met in other books. The books in the early stages introduce chil... More ...

Hamilton Trust is a subscription website aimed at teachers in primary schools. It has a bank of plans which can be used in the primary classroom with little or no changes needing to be made. There are weekly plans for Literacy and Numeracy and 6 units of Science work for each year group. There are also plans for different topics, especially useful if you are teaching a creative curriculum.   Read and Respond Engage
Has it made a difference to the way in which you teach your subject? As a Primary Arts advisor I would recommend that teachers consider using Read and Respond Engage. I recently led a day of Drama into Literacy for Y5 and 6 children on Victorian child labour, and think that the unit Street Child by Berlie Doherty could be effectively used for follow-up and support. No matter how creative we teachers are, and what innovative and unusual ideas we come up with, every one of us has our own comfort z... More ...

  Connectors
Connectors is a new non-fiction reading scheme that encourages children to become more independent readers, focusing on reciprocal reading techniques. It is primarily aimed at years 4, 5 and 6; however we have used it with more able, gifted and talented year 3 pupils. The format works very well alongside existing fiction guided reading schemes or whole texts used in guided reading/independent reading sessions. It helps to introduce pupils to non-fiction in an engaging format, using up to date... More ...

  Collins Primary Literacy Scheme
We have been using this resource in school for the last 2 years. Initially we decided to trial it with only one year group (year 7s) to test suitability before we spent a lot of money buying it in for the whole school. The Year 7 teacher was so impressed by it that the following year it was ordered into the other classes. This is the second year that I have been using it. If I’m honest it is only really in the last 8 months that I have started to use it fully. I have a composite Yr2/3 ... More ...

  Word Shark 4
Wordshark is a software program designed to aid in the teaching of reading and spelling. It uses sound, graphics and text in a multi-sensory approach to practise word recognition and spelling. These skills are taught through a range of 55 different games, covering over 9000 words and sounds – including all of the word lists for key stages 1, 2 and 3. In addition to all of these words, the program allows for the addition of words not on the lists: these can be typed in and then the sounds o... More ...
