Review

Floppy´s Phonics is a series of books linked to the teaching sequence of phonics in Letters and Sounds.

The resources were purchased as part of the matched funding scheme for use with Reception and Year 1 children mainly and Year 2 children requiring phonics catch up. Books were purchased in sets of six to allow small group work either as a follow up to reinforce and practise teaching input or as a guided group activity.

Books will be used alongside other texts to support teaching of reading skills.

How the resource was used

We´ve just started using the resources which cover the sounds introduced in Letters and Sounds. The books provide lists of words and pictures exemplifying the relevant sound. The text at the back gives children the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the sound in their reading.

The resource is used with the lower ability group in a year 1 class with a spread of abilities and a high number of children from low socio economic backgrounds.

The best thing about this resource

Being provided with lists of words with the relevant sound and pictures is extremely useful as it allows children to find examples of words which include that sound. The text at the back gives children the opportunity to apply their knowledge of the sound in their reading. Children love the illustrations and enjoy the challenge of seeing how many words they can find in the picture.

How students responded to it

Children are still enjoying using the resources (six weeks in). There is sufficient progression to avoid children getting bored. The books are used alongside other books.
