La Jolie Ronde French Scheme of Work for Years 5 and 6 is a comprehensive set of lesson plans to help teachers teach French in accordance with the Key Stage 2 Modern Foreign Languages Framework. It is particularly ideal for those teachers who are not language specialists. The scheme makes the assumption that participating children will have had some prior learning of French either through the Year 3 and 4 scheme or an alternative course. The units of work contain objectives adapted from the different strands of the framework ensuring broad and detailed coverage of the aspects of oracy, literacy and intercultural understanding. There are very useful scheme of work overviews for each set of lesson plans, which identify key skills and provide activities.

The Year 5 scheme has a very welcome cross-curricular focus, allowing teachers to link work in French with other areas of the curriculum. My school has chosen to deliver MFL in sessions lasting a maximum of thirty minutes and the flexibility of this programme’s short sections fits well with that.

The resource is an interactive one, comprising a number of elements. There is a folder containing planning documentation, lesson plans and a section containing useful extras. The well-designed and clearly presented digital resources are as follows: a Resources and Whiteboard CD-ROM, a sound CD-ROM for Year 5 and another for Year 6, and a CD-ROM containing lesson plans. There is also a CD-ROM containing songs and poems in French. The ‘useful extras’ section in the folder contains transcripts of these, which I have found invaluable.

Each lesson plan lists the resources required and the teacher’s workload is helped by the fact that the majority of these are included in the pack. Within the lesson plans, a system of symbols identifies where the resources from the pack are to be used. Core vocabulary, knowledge about language and learning strategies are also clearly listed within each plan. As a non-specialist teacher, I found these particularly useful as a reminder of what I should be focusing on and trying to achieve.
