SNAP Behaviour

overview

SNAP-Behaviour is an excellent computer-aided assessment and profiling program for professionals who work with young people aged 5-16. It offers an effective tool to help understand behaviours demonstrated by young people and tailors strategies to support them to maximise academic success. Through completing three on-screen "tick-box" questionnaires, information can be gathered from the class teacher, learning support assistant and, ideally, from the parent and pupil to create a behaviour profile. This provides an overview of the pupil’s behaviour, presented as a series of bar charts instantly highlighting the areas of need in a very striking and visual way. Users can then click on any bar to open a Word document containing tailored strategies to support the young person, at home or at school.

The package includes the software and a concise user manual, incorporating instructions and the rationale behind it. Reading this booklet alone is a good first step for anyone working with children demonstrating concerning behaviour.

SNAP-Behaviour is not intended to be used with those pupils where a medical disorder has been diagnosed as responsible for EBD, nor does it intend to diagnose. It is ideally used in cases where evidence of Specific Learning Difficulties is not apparent, yet challenging behaviour is still causing a barrier to learning.

The software helps to break down the issues the child has into focussed areas and provides all interested parties, with a bank excellent advice tailored to the specific child, to support them in their continued progress.

As a class teacher I have found it a great addition to the other facilities at my disposal, not least as it can be conducted so quickly. When used to gather evidence from other sources, it can be most illuminating and has helped to shift my focus from the problem “child” to the problem “behaviour”.
