overview
Debbie Hepplewhite’s Synthetic Phonics for Can Do Cubes is a product based upon the Rose Report (March 2006) and developed to promote a systematic and synthetic approach to reading, writing and spelling. By using a simple ‘Alphabet Code’ of letter correspondences, Can Do Cubes lays the foundation of literacy in two stages. The teaching model includes a DVD with Debbie discussing the principles and practice of synthetic phonics and 'sounding out' the alphabetic code, instruction books, lesson demonstrations, a selection of games/activities and examples of self assessment. There are also examples of recording and handwriting practice ideas for the pupils to explore and enjoy. There is a comprehensive website, which offers links to research, downloadable information and free resources. The DVD is a valuable guide to introduce the teaching and learning opportunities embedded within Synthetic Phonics for Can Do Cubes.
Stage 1 teaches the 42 letter/sound correspondences over eight weeks using eight sets of cubes, the DVD, ‘at a glance’ wall chart and the website. Cube 1 features s,a,t,i,p,n, which are then followed by cubes 2 to 8 introducing a progression of sounds including ee (b-ee), or (f-or-t), oo (m-oo-n, ng (s-i-ng) and so on. To complete the code letter progression through Key Stages 1 and 2 correspondences, Stage 2 is designed to teach identification of upper/lower case letters, simple conventions of sentence formation, letter/ sound correspondences for the more complex alphabetic code in spelling, and pronunciation variations for reading and writing.
Debbie Hepplewhite's Synthetic Phonics for Can Do Cubes is available in both a 'School' and a 'Home' edition. Both editions feature Stage One and Stage Two sets and contain full instructions, DVD, charts etc. The important difference between the two editions is simply the number included of each cube, making the Home Edition suitable for one to one and small group instruction and the School Edition usable by larger groups and for whole class instruction
This review is based on work with the Home Edition.
