overview
OptEmail is the ideal solution to the problems that occur when trying to teach Unit 3E of the ICT QCA. The interface is extremely simple and easy to use, whilst combining all the factors needed to show the children how emails are created, sent and received. There appears to be no limit to the amount of children able to log onto the system, so it is possible to use it across KS2.
After the child has logged on (it is possible for you to set the password as ‘none’ or let the child set their own) a simple email screen is displayed. The greater portion of the screen consists of the usual address bar, subject box and copy to facility, with a larger box provided for the actual message. Children have a choice of large or small text, bold or italic and an underline facility. It is possible to add attachments (these are a choice of images) and reply to emails received. Clear buttons to the Inbox, Outbox, Addresses etc are set down the side of the screen for easy navigation.
There is not much more to say, apart from saying how brilliant it is. The software covers exactly the requirements set out in the QCA Scheme of Work, it is easy to set up, provides a clear ‘child friendly’ user interface, as well as ‘help’ videos and, being a self contained unit, is completely safe from outside interference. A must have for every Year 3 teacher.
