Footprints-Science: Life Processes and Living Things is a series of 25 interactive PowerPoint presentations. It is designed to be used on an interactive whiteboard with GCSE pupils, but it could also be used with a multimedia projector and laptop (the students can use the mouse to interact).

The presentations cover most aspects of the GCSE course and also one or two aspects that are not on the Key Stage 4 curriculum (e.g. joints). Each presentation is a series of slides that can be used as a whole presentation (for the majority of the lesson) or as single slides by just selecting the slide you want to use (for starters, plenaries or reinforcement of a topic or concept in the lesson).

Each presentation contains a variety of slides which contain facts, animations, drag and drop exercises, quizzes and word searches. The animations are good for getting across difficult concepts so that the students can visualise processes that we could otherwise only describe. The drag and drop exercises may be considered by the more academic students as a little beneath them but they are good at motivating the less able students who like to take a more active role in the lesson. The word searches can be printed off and used as a paper based exercise.

The material is versatile and selected sections could easily be used in the Key Stage 3 curriculum.

There is a Sc 1 presentation that is useful for all three disciplines, with a particularly good section on “Lines of best fit”

Since showing it to my colleagues they could not wait for it to be on the school system so they could use it. In fact, minutes after it was on system they were using it!

The software provides an extra dimension to a lesson without you having to spend hours preparing it.
