overview
Cabri 3D v2 is an exciting new development which has similar functionality to Cabri Geometry II plus, but operates in the world of three dimensions. It is both difficult and tedious to demonstrate and reproduce geometrical constructs using pen and paper in 2D but almost impossible in 3D. This program allows the student to get a real feel for what is going on without even touching a multi-link cube! With the ability to bring a difficult topic to life and develop reasoning skills along the way, it will be a great addition to the tools available in a maths classroom. It is ideal for hands on use and as a demonstration tool with an interactive whiteboard.
The software can be used as a demonstration tool or to enable students to explore and discover for themselves. It allows the user to construct and manipulate a range of solid geometrical objects in three dimensions. Constructions can be freely moved using the mouse so that they can be viewed from all angles. The steps involved in producing a construction can be recorded and replayed, which is useful in assessing students. Distances, lengths, areas, volumes and angles can be measured at the click of a mouse. These can then be used to make further calculations using the calculator tool.
The publisher’s information is accurate, it certainly does everything it states and quite possibly more!
The software covers all aspects of 3D geometry in the National Curriculum, although probably in more detail than is required. For A-level, there is in fact very little geometry included in the course. The constraints of the syllabus, and the limited amount of time available for the delivery of the A-level course, makes the inclusion of Cabri something of a luxury. Having said this, I think that it is a luxury well worth investing in.
It can be used across the ability range although I feel that it is directed at the higher ability students. However, less able students within my classroom did also benefit hugely from the demonstrations.
This is a truly impressive piece of software and will enable an entire section of mathematics to be taught in an exciting and interactive way. It can bring to life a subject which in printed form is only really accessible to the very bright. I think there is vast potential in this product and I have probably only just touched the surface during the evaluation period.
