Cheltenham festivals

Event evaluations drive Festivals’ strategic development

Background

Cheltenham Festivals has been running the renowned Literature Festival since 1949. Now in its 56th year, the festival continues to grow, selling in 005 a record number of 70,000+ tickets spread over 300+ events. From the benchmark of this success came the now equally respected festivals in music and science.

Objectives

Cheltenham Festivals wish to extend and develop the education programmes of the Literature and Science Festivals and evaluate activities on offer to maximise the potential of these festivals in bringing inspiration to a younger audience.

Response

It was agreed that Schoolzone would evaluate aspects of the 005 Literature Festival and then work with the Festivals’ team to develop new content ideas and evaluation methodologies for the 2006 Science festival.

Project details

Schoolzone recruited, organised and hosted a Literature Festival focus group, looking particularly at the education programme. We are now working with the Festivals’ team on four aspects of the Science festival:
  • Content Development - networked PCs loaded with interactive and educational science content for the Discovery Zone.
  • Visitor evaluations – delivery of an online feedback service in the venue for the public.
  • Educational evaluations - creation of an online evaluation format suitable for use on hand-held devices and recruitment from Schoolzone’s teacher community to provide ‘live’ event evaluations.
  • Promotional activities – creation of a viral marketing campaign for Schoolzone’s registered users and the client’s contact list, aims being to raise the profile of the Science Festival amongst educationalists regionally and involve more local teachers in festival activities and the evaluation process; allowing teachers to have direct influence on the Cheltenham Festivals’ education programme development.

Project highlights

This project draws on Schoolzone’s unique ability to involve UK teachers in educational event evaluation, development and attendance and to provide the necessary technical support. The collaboration is bringing added value to the continuing strategic development of the Festivals’ education programmes.
