Adrian Bruce – The best symmetry animation

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: These web pages can be downloaded as a PowerPoint presentation that is an excellent resource to use on an interactive whiteboard or large screen when teaching children about line symmetry. It has a wonderful animation of a butterfly opening and closing its wings which is a perfect way to demonstrate to children how a butterfly could be folded in half along a vertical line to be symmetrical. The presentation is filled with other examples – pictures captions and questions that stimulate children to talk about the symmetry they see. It has a section of symmetry in nature that could be used to inspire children to look for symmetry in this field themselves as well as symmetry in animals, masks, buildings and reflections. The section on symmetry in shapes looks at how many lines of symmetry each shape has and poses the question ‘Is there a pattern?’ – a great starting point for an investigation.
