Review: History. A very useful reference tool from the History Channel, it produces a potted biography on most famous people. Pupils could be given a research topic for homework. The database is from the States but it does have even minor British Historical figures’ biographies. A particularly useful feature of this site is that when you click on the name of the person you have searched for, a list of related people also appears. Also any website that is deemed suitably related to the searched person also comes up.

Review: Another standard format site from about.com with research about the history of some of the major characters of the 20th century; provides a very useful series of links to other sites. Having found the person that you want to look at, the link then takes you to a series of other sides opening up a wealth of information, though it is by no means comprehensive, and can is certainly not anglo-centric. It will take a long time to look through all the links, but it is an interesting place to brouse rather than to expect to find what you want easily and quickly.
