Review: This is a useful activity which would be ideal for use on an interactive whiteboard to demonstrate rotational symmetry. On this webpage is a grid of small squares with horizontal and vertical axes. Pupils select colours and draw shapes by clicking in various squares on the grid. The shapes produced are automatically rotated and drawn in all four quadrants. This could be a useful resource for teachers looking for ways to introduce rotational symmetry to a class. It should result in much useful discussion.

Review: This is a resource from the Ambleside Primary School website which would be great for use on an interactive whiteboard. There is a selection of JAVA based online tools which explore the properties of various regular and irregular shapes as well as mirror and rotational symmetry. Each page has a brief selection of teaching ideas / notes. They have been developed for use by a class teacher using a computer with a class or group, although they could be used for investigations by independent groups of children.

Adrian Bruce – The best symmetry animation

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2
Review: These web pages can be downloaded as a PowerPoint presentation that is an excellent resource to use on an interactive whiteboard or large screen when teaching children about line symmetry. It has a wonderful animation of a butterfly opening and closing its wings which is a perfect way to demonstrate to children how a butterfly could be folded in half along a vertical line to be symmetrical. The presentation is filled with other examples – pictures captions and questions that stimulate children to talk about the symmetry they see. It has a section of symmetry in nature that could be used to inspire children to look for symmetry in this field themselves as well as symmetry in animals, masks, buildings and reflections. The section on symmetry in shapes looks at how many lines of symmetry each shape has and poses the question ‘Is there a pattern?’ – a great starting point for an investigation.

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: This worksheet is an investigative activity which would be useful for children developing a knowledge of simple 2D shapes. This sheet consolidates understanding of the properties of different shapes. It is essentially a record sheet in which children record the properties of 2D shapes. There is space for children to record the name of each shape as well as the number of faces, vertices etc and whether it is symmetrical. It is part of the excellent Primary Resources website which offers a wide range of quality resources free of charge to Primary teachers. A site well worth looking at.

Review: This activity is part of the "Math cat" website. "Polygon playground" is an activity where users are able to arrange designs with online movable polygons by dragging them with their mouse. This activity might well be useful for exploring different aspects of geometry. In particular, the properties of different shapes, tesselation or symmetry could well be developed through this activity. The illustrations are bright and attractive meaning that this might well be appropriate for use with an interative whiteboard.
