Review: This is another super activity designed by Gareth Pitchford for primaryresources.co.uk. The symmetry tool is designed to be used with Key stage 1 and 2 children. This program would work very well with an interactive whiteboard as initially the shape/picture is only shown on one side of the mirror line. Using IWB software children could predict the reflection before it is confirmed. There are a variety of half shapes that are reflected to make a whole.

Types Of Symmetry In The Plane

Mainly suitable for:
KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This page contains quick descriptions of the four types of symmetry in the plane. Diagrams and problems help to paint the picture of these transformations. The explanations are clear and concise. The "problems" after the explanations contains several descriptive questions and investigations which ask students to apply their knowledge of the four different types of symmetry in answering these questions. This could be useful as a printed worksheeet in class or even as an interactive whiteboard resource.

Many viruses have a symmetrical structure made from basic building blocks, and biologists have struggled to explain some of the more detailed shapes. Now mathematicians are using complex theories of symmetry to reveal these viral…

Review: This web page gives a tutorial for making an irregular tessellating shape using a piece of Card. Detailed step-by-step instructions are given along with clear illustrations of the steps involved. This activity has been tried and tested in classsrooms and is one that children generally enjoy considerably as well as getting a sense of the features of any particular shape which make it tesselate. a simple activity but one that will be ov value to teachers probably at Key Stage Two.

Review: This is a really useful activity designed to reinforce childrens understanding of reflective symmetry. There is a selection of different 2D shapes on this webpage. They have to be dragged into on of three sets, depending on whether they have no lines of symmetry, one or more than one line of symmetry. This is an interactive activity that requires a Flash plug-in. It would be ideal for use with an interactive whiteboard but could equally be used by pupils on their own PC. Recommended!
