Review: This page has links to five mathematical games, four from India and one from Egypt. They are: Sixteen soldiers, Nine Mens Morris, Pachisi, Alquerque and an unknown game. Each game has a picture taken in the relevant country with a description of how to play the game and something about its history. All of the games have versions that we play in Britain today.Children are challenged to play the games and investigate various things about them. Many of the challenges are open ended so children could tackle them at their own level. The strength of the site is that it gives a different way to introduce an investigation or challenge to children by showing them a game they know but in a different form.

Review: This is an interactive maths game that needs Shockwave installed in order to run. It is an excellent game to use when teaching children to problem solve and investigate numbers. The idea is to find ways of using 4 numbers to match a target number exactly. You don't have to use all the numbers - but you can use each number only once. You can add, subtract, multiply, divide and even put them together. There are different levels and each will vary the number of signs you can use and the choice of digits will be reduced to increase the difficulty. A teacher could introduce the activity on an interactive whiteboard or even an ordinary board, explaining how the game works. Children could then play as a class, discussing what to choose and why certain numbers would not work, or they could play in pairs or individually on individual computers.

This is a really different and original website. The facts for each given number often lead to more investigative activities. Children could be encouraged to think of their own facts for each of the numbers of the month. They could make up a collection. An interesting website that is well worth a look!
