Again

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS2
Review: Again and Again is an investigation involving decimals and fractions. A knowledge of the equivalence of decimals and fractions is needed. The investigation also requires the pupil to make generalisations; this could be done algebraically using words or formulae. The activity could also be used as an ICT activity using a spreadsheet to carry out the calculations again and again.

Un-magic Square * * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Un-magic Square

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS2
Review: A maths investigation with a difference. This is an un-magic square in which pupils have to try to make the opposite of a magic square. There is a large grid of 3 X 3 squares on this webpage. The aim of this activity is to drag numbers 1 - 9 onto the grid so that each row and column has a different total. This is unlike a magic square in which each row and column total must be the same. A maths investigation with a difference, it would be great to use on an interactive whiteboard with different pupils trying to solve the puzzle.

Caterpillars * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Caterpillars

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: A worksheet on which children investigate patterns of numbers. Having been given a caterpillar which follows the rule they are then asked to complete each caterpillar. The rule is that they add 1 to an odd number and halve an even number until the number one is reached. Children are challenged to find the shortest or longest caterpillar when starting with a number under 20. This would be a useful sheet to use when asking children to record results in an investigation. Children could work in pairs to find out what happens with different numbers as starters for the caterpillars. The greatest value would be in sharing results and discussing what they had found out.

AIMS Education Foundation * * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

AIMS Education Foundation

Mainly suitable for:
KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4
Review: This is the AIMS website. AIMS stands for ´Activities integrating mathematics and science´. AIMS is an American organisation who produce commercial materials, many of which are advertised on this site. There are plenty of free resources however and the ´Activities´ section, in particular, is well worth looking at as it contains some really useful resources which could well be of use to teachers. However, they do have an American bias and could well need adapting for use in the UK. The free activities are classified according to age which is useful. There is also a ´Puzzle Corner´ which contains a selection of challenging maths puzzles designed to encourage independent thought. A potentially useful site that is worth looking at.

Patterns of 3 * * This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website This is a star rating given by UK teachers who have reviewed the website

Patterns of 3

Mainly suitable for:
Well suited for use in UK schools KS1, KS2
Review: Two worksheets that can be printed off in order for children to investigate patterns of three. The first asks children to count on in threes using the number grid and colour the numbers they land on which range from 1 to 50. Children are asked to look at the patterns they have made and to write the numbers they have coloured in boxes. If this activity was used as part of a class activity it would be useful for children to talk to each other about the patterns and the numbers they have coloured and then report back to the whole class in a plenary session. The second sheet is a number square using the same numbers but starting in the middle with the numbers going round and round until the largest are on the outside. Children are again encouraged to count in threes and colour the numbers they land on then compare their results to the first grid they completed. An excellent investigation which practises the skill of counting in threes but asks children to compare results.

Maths

Site owner's description: Designed for KS3 students, TinkerPlots brings an interactive dynamic dimension to data explorations in maths and science classrooms! TinkerPlots helps students see the connection between collecting and analysing data and formulating and testing their own hypotheses. TinkerPlots was developed by the Statistics Education Research group (SERG) at the University of Massachusetts. The group's mission is to better understand how people reason about probability, statistics and data analysis, and to use this understanding to improve the teaching of these topics. Students use TinkerPlots to create colourful visual representations of data - making sense out of numbers and recognising patterns as they unfold. TinkerPlots' amazing computer learning environment lets students learn by investigation.
