Review: This is a fantastic mathematical tool designed by Gareth pitchford for primaryresources.co.uk. This is a super flexible tool that can be used from nursery right upto year 6. It works like a function machine you can choose your starting number from 0-10, 0-20 or 0-50 whats great is you can type in any starting number. The second level of this super tool is that you can choose the steps for the counting to go up in as well from random computer generated options 0-10, 0-20 and 0-50 and again you can manually choose any step. The machine also allows you to hide the start number and steps. This would work fantastically on an interactive whiteboard.

Review: Single page containing a large number to be cut out. This could be useful for young children learning numbers. It would also help with their cutting and colouring skills. As you would expect fom the BBC, this is a useful, if simple, high quality activity. It is part of a set of printable worksheets oand activities designed for young children aimed at learning and reinforcing number recognition. There are other activities such as number ladders and number sequences which ask children to count and to put numbers in order.

Review: A bright, cheerful site from the BBC featuring some useful activities aimet at reinforcing number concepts up to 20. There are online game on this website along with printable worksheets to accompany the games. The BBC site has a variety of number sequence games and activities, also a good section for parents and teachers. It covers Level 1 and 2 of "numbers and the number system". The games would be suitable for home use or for use in school, perhaps using an interactive whiteboard.

Review: An online interactive game from Puzzle Maths that involves ordering numbers. It could be introduced using an interactive whiteboard then used by children in the group session of the numeracy lesson. It would also be useful as a starter activity or in the plenary session. A demonstration of how to play is given if needed. It is a puzzle solving activity rather than just ordering numbers. Children are given three numbers under ten but only one appears at a time. They have to decide where, on the three rungs of the ladder, to place a number. As they cannot change the position of the number when the second one appears they have to develop a strategy for deciding where a number should go. For example it would not be a good idea to place a very low number near the top of a ladder. A great idea and simple to use.

LearningPlanet.com - Number Train

Mainly suitable for:
KS1
Review: A free numeracy activity for younger pupils. Children have to click and drag carriages (called boxcars) to make a train. The carriages are numbered 1 to 10. When the train is made, children then choose a number by clicking on it and watch and listen to that number of items being counted out on the screen. The text is also spoken (with an American accent) when the speaker icon is pressed. When all the digits have been selected, the train moves off. This activity would be useful for number recognition, sequencing numbers 1 to 10 and 1 to 1 matching for younger pupils and would help to improve mouse control.

LearningPlanet.com - 123 Order

Mainly suitable for:
KS1
Review: A free numeracy activity for younger pupils. Children have to click on digits to complete a sequence of consecutive numbers between 1 and 10. The numbers are counted out, with sound, from 1 to 10. Children listen to the first two numbers in a sequence of three. To complete the sequence, the correct number must be selected. If they get it right, the sequence is spoken back to them and the first two digits are shown, but, for some reason, not the selected digit. If they get it wrong they are told to try again. Children then click on an arrow to move on to the next set. Sound is needed for this game, but unfortunately the voice used is rather irritating. The text, spoken in an American accent, can be heard again when the speaker icon is pressed. This activity would be quite useful for number recognition, sequencing numbers 1 to 10 and to improve mouse control.

Spider Count

Mainly suitable for:
KS1
Review: A simple online counting game in which spiders drop down the screen on the click of a button and a numeral appears. The numeral changes with the number of spiders on screen. This game would be useful for children learning to count and recognise numbers to 10. It could be used on an interactive whiteboard with children taking turns to press a button and see the spiders crawl down. Teachers could extend the game by asking children to predict how many spiders will be on the screen when another button is pressed. They could be asked to write the number on the interactive whiteboard that will appear when another spider is added. The game could also be adapted to teaching 1 more and sums could be written on the board to correspond with what was happening on screen. A good way to practice number recognition and counting for children working on a computer individually or in pairs.

Review: Smudge’s dot to dot activity is one of three activities on the Smudge the Spaniel Starting with numbers CD produced by Storm Educational Software. In the activity children need to join the dots to complete the outline of the picture before colouring it in. There are three choices – 1-10, 1-20 and 1-30. The whole package is designed to encourage the early number skills of counting, number recognition, reading, writing, ordering, subtracting and addition of numbers. A demonstration of this activity is available for downloading from this page but some of its features are disabled. However, it does give purchasers an idea of what is on the CD and its suitability for the children and objectives concerned. It could also be used as an activity on an interactive whiteboard as part of a maths lesson.
