Review: This could be a really useful activity. BBC Online make a difficult subject fun with this game that teaches children about datahandling, and in particular, different types of averages. The activity features four trains. Children are given the length of the recent journeys for each of these trains and are then required to calculate the mean median and mode of each of these trains. This is a simple but fun activity that would be of considerable use to maths teachers at Key Stage. This would be reallyuseful for SATs revision

Review: This is a website from the excellent Primary Resources website. This site offers lots of high quality resources, free of charge to Primary teachers. This worksheet is designed to give pupils practice in calculating different types of averages, mean median and mode. It is the format of a table containing information about the members of the England football team. The information includes name, age, position, number of caps and goals scored. There are some questions about the data which requires pupils to use it to calculate the answers. Pupils could also make up their own questions. The only slight problem is that the info is slightly out of date (Beckham playing for Man United?!) but this doesnt matter to the maths content.

I would suggest you use it on an average to above average class as I have found Bingo and the lower attaining classes don't really match very well. As you need to download this software, take care as with all downloads from the Internet.

The Welsh Rugby league table is given, complete with games played, won, lost points for/against etc. There are several questions on this sheet that asks the children about different types of averages in relation to this league table. Mean mode and median. This would probably appeal to many children due to the sporting context. It is a useful resource on averages in a real life context.

This would tie in nicely with data handling work. RHL School web site also provides a large quantity of printable worksheets for use with primary children pertaining to various mathematical concepts. All the number computations are covered along with rounding numbers up. There is also a section which provides problem solving activities for children. This site requires initial teacher evelaution to select the worksheets that are appropriate for the children?s current level of understanding. Also within the site is links to other web sites and worksheets related to language activities.
